Letters from Readers: MORE ABOUT IGNORING THE CENSORS. "Even though you refused his caution you should give careful consideration to the advice of JS in your last issue. When you scream so loud at the censors you only give them a better target to aim at. By actively fighting censorship you only tend to alienate people. Besides, you should realize that our government officials always know what is best for us." AT Chgo III. ....Editor's note: Canada is one of the countires in which anti-censorship groups have been virtually absent. While complacent Canadians have been "ignoring" the problem zealous Mrs Grundys have been successful in banning from sale many books we in the US take for granted. Canadian customs refuse to admit any health books showing the human form labelling them "obscene". It is our belief that strong groups such as American Civil Liberties Union, The Quakers and others who fight oppression have been responsible for preventing destructive censorship in the U.S.

AMG FILM, "BROTHER CINDER-ELMER" TO BE REVIEWED IN SUMMER 58 PHYSIQUE PICTORIAL. "Brother Cinder-Elmer" borrows half its plot from the classic "Cinderella" and the other half from "Street Fight" (see page 30 of this book). Younger brother Jim is given all the household dirty work to do, and his lazy older step-brother Don even forces him to do such humiliating tasks as to wash his feet when he showers. Jim is uncomplaining until one day Don gives him a particularly cruel blow for breaking a dish. He packs his belongings and begins to leave, and when Don tries forcibly to stop him a battle begins. Though Don is twice his size Jim gives an excellent accounting for himself. In the heat of battle, Jim grabs a plaster tiger and hits Don on the head with it and feeling he may have killed him grabs up his clothes which were torn off in the struggle and turns to flee. In our Summer issue the picture will be illustrated, and the plot further explained.

TO WHAT EXTENT SHOULD PHYSIQUE PHOTOGRAPHERS CONFORM? Brilliant psychologists have pointed out that in America and many other countries as well there is today an almost pathological urge to conform in almost every phase of life, and some of them frankly suggest intelligent revolt. Certain pseudo-moral taboos greatly limit the expression of physique photographers. There are various pressure groups which object to physique books solely because of the degree of nudity involved. In contrast, certain Los Angeles dealers refused to handle our Winter 57 edition of Physique Pictorial because the subjects on the cover were in clothes-and "why couldnt we conform to the accepted standard and keep our covers on standard physique poses"? No matter how willing one is to conform he will always displease some people anyway.

Conformity is as dangerous to a society as cancer is to a body (unless of course one considers the societies of ants and bees to be an ideal goal to strive for). In our own field of physique photography we see no reason why conformity is either necessary or desirable. We do consider it prudent that all workers in this field avoid entanglement with the various laws which forbid the display of genitalia, pubic hair, implied fornication etc., and we feel they would be wise to stay well on the safe side of the border area of picturizations which might too easily lend themselves to misinterpretations. But some laws and their enforcements attempt to cover such a vague field as to forbid almost any picture that a prurient minded person by stretching his imagination might read something inio.

As to standardizatioh of physique poses, we consider it high time they become unstandardized. What was good enough for grandpa isnt good enough for us. Each physique artist should be able to express himself the way he desires to. In the case of Physique Pictorial, even if it means having circulation go down to a mere subsistence level we will not accept the dictates of newsdealers, pressure groups or others who would force us
